The kitten adoption program was started in September, 2004, by Dr. Gina and the Tantramar Veterinary Hospital to assist in lowering the unwanted cat population in Sackville and surrounding areas while at the same time finding loving homes for kittens already born.
Owners, finding themselves with an unplanned litter of kittens can call to inquire if there is room in the program. Owners are required to have the mother spayed (at their expense) and can then release approved kittens to the Tantramar Veterinary Hospital for adoption. To be approved, the kittens must be showing no signs of ill-health or contagious diseases and have been raised in a friendly home environment.
When kittens are accepted into the program, they are each tested for FIV (Feline Immunosuppressive Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia). Kittens are kept a minimum of 5 days in quarantine before being placed on the adoption floor.
Prior to adoption, each kitten has a complete check up including:
- Flea treatment
- Ear cleaning/ treatment for mites if needed
- Nail trimming
- A bath
- First vaccinations
Potential adopters are required to complete an adoption form. If accepted, the new owner is responsible for the cost of the FIV/FeLV test and microchipping. A spay/neuter deposit is also required which will be reimbursed when your cat is spayed/neutered.
Throughout the years, the Tantramar Veterinary Hospital has found homes for dozens of kittens, many of which are now regular clients.
